Active Transport Championship - Term 1 2024

Paul Carron
Albany Primary School

Our Active Transport Competition is back and has kicked off this week.

This year, there will be class rewards for the highest active transporting class in Year 1/2, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6, plus top individual active transporters will go into the raffle for great bike prizes at the end of the year. This prize pool has been peeled back a bit since the launch of the competition as we went very prize heavy early on try and really drive enthusiasm around the competition. We are now going for cheaper and easier rewards, like an hour of freewheeling time for the winning classes.

We feel that this competition has been a big driver in lifting our active transport rates from about 25% a few years ago to about 50% last year. I have noticed the last couple of weeks that our bike racks have been a bit lighter than in the past, so I am hoping that the start of this competition starts to drive a return of bikes to racks in the numbers that we have become used to seeing, especially since this year we have a brand new set of racks installed to keep up with the growing demand.

I have included an example (with names blacked out) of what the sheets that go in classrooms look like. These are then collected by our YourMove team and the end of the competition and results are tallied up.

Hey Paul, thanks for your reflection on how your interclass competition has boosted AT at the school (60 points for running the competition and 20 points for your reflection here). Here's to a boost in numbers in 2024. 🤞 Let us know how it goes!
