Celebrating active transport

Rachel Orbuck
City of Joondalup

On this beautiful morning, Wednesday 8th May, I hosted my first staff event and my apologies for the long story...but I am a little bit excited by the buzz this generated and I have lots of great pictures to share! This event was all about celebrating the efforts of staff who actively commute and promoting active transport to staff who are not sure how or where to start. Today, City of Joondalup staff were encouraged to actively commute to enter a prize draw, and those who drove were invited to attend and learn more about active transport options. The event was promoted through the staff intranet, posters around the work place and our CEO weekly all-staff email.

It was a very early start to ensure everything was set up in time for our 7:00am event which finished up around 9:30am. Helpful information on display included Transperth bus timetables, Map Your Move Joondalup routes, BikeLinc registration info, and brochures providing tips to choose the right bike and bike maintenance.

Staff enjoyed free coffee and delicious treats whilst having a mooch at the displays, and staff who cycled to work were able to have their bikes serviced for free! The coffee tally was 156 cups and 100 Cinnayum buns! Thank you to Perk Me Up Coffee, Cinnayum and Bikefix Mobile - we will certainly be using these vendors again!

The City's four push bikes were on display and it was interesting to learn that a fair few staff were unaware they had access to these bicycles for lunch time rides or for commuting to meetings! I have plans to relocate the bikes to a more accessible location and hopefully staff start using them more now as a result.

Staff interested in cycling, whether they are confident riders or newbies, were invited to express interest in a Bicycle User Group for City staff that I hope to start soon. With 14 registered, I am excited to see where it will go. We also had plenty of helpful hints provided by regular active commuters to share with staff who may be considering active transport.

The prize packs on offer to active commuters included 1 of 4 $50 vouchers for 99Bikes or 1 of 3 Your Move back packs filled with a Your Move commuter towel and bike cover (redeemed with Your Move points) and a hat kindly provided by BikeLinc. With 14 entries, the odds were good! Congratulations to our 7 winners!!

I am SO thankful to colleagues who assisted me in engaging with staff, providing education around active transport and helping active commuters sign up for the prize draw. I am also so amazed at how many staff got involved in today's event and hung around for a chat to learn more about active transport options. I'm still riding the high! I can't wait for future events, I had a lot of fun :)

I'm not sure if it is the caffeine, adrenaline or endorphines - but I can certainly sense the buzz you are feeling after this event Rachel 😁. And I bet all the staff who attended had the same feeling too! You have put on a super event and earned 90 points for that (including the bike fix workshops you included) as well as 30 points for your super engaging story. I look forward to hearing how the BUG initiative develops too! See you again soon and have a wonderful weekend 🙂.
