Connecting Schools Congratulations

Elaine Lewis

This year our school was awarded a Connecting Schools grant from Your Move, Department of Transport. A large grant was awarded to the school, with $7,499 of funding providing some fabulous active transport initiatives as outlined below.

Bike safety checks were conducted by People on Bicycles before the bike education sessions commenced. This was a worthwhile endeavour because some of the bikes had faulty brakes and other maintenance issues.

The second of four bike education sessions was conducted this week. Students learnt about helmet safety, getting on and off safely and enjoyed various riding challenges, such as slow bike races. The bike education sessions involve an instructor from People on Bicycles, as well as our own Mr Porcaro who completed his Bike Education Certification in Term 1 through our Connecting Schools funding.

The Connecting Schools grant also enabled the purchase of new bikes for Early Childhood. We now have 4 new balance bikes, 4 trikes and road signs for Early Learning Classes 3-5. These are a fabulous addition to the early childhood resources that encourage an active healthy lifestyle.

In addition, the grant provided a bike rack for staff bikes. This is a valuable support in terms of staff modelling to their students, by riding to school. We are grateful to the participating staff.

Finally, congratulations are extended to the Group 3 Year 4 Your Move leaders in Room 8, who ran the Walk Safely to School Day recently and conducted climate change experiments earlier this term. Group 4 leaders organised a World Bicycle Day event that happened on Wednesday 5th June, as well as other promotional activities. All our Your Move leaders in Room 8 have demonstrated outstanding commitment to Your Move this semester. They particularly enjoyed the bike education sessions. Great job everyone! Huge thanks to Your Move staff for their ongoing support ... you make a difference!

Hi Elaine. Sorry for this late reply. Somehow this story slipped through the system and it was only whilst reading your next story that I noticed that something was not quite right. (Pleased to say that with the new system...this won't be able to happen! 🥳) 40 points for the grant process and 20 points for this fantastic and inspiring summary of all the AT achievements at Coolbinia PS. Thanks for sharing. 🚲🛴🚶💪
