End of Year Survey & Planning for 2024

Our enthusiastic Your Move Leaders conducted our end-of-year Your Move survey last Friday. They worked on this in pairs, visiting all the classes. Before going around the school they rehearsed what they would say and how they would do the survey.

The results, when compared with the the start-of-the-year, showed there was little change. The percentages were the same for car use (63%), walking (22 %), bikes & scooters (15%) and public transport (1 %). There was however, a small increase in cycling, up 2%, at the end of the year.

This sets a challenge for 2024. The new Your Move teams next year will need to address this finding. Special event days and other promotional activities always result in a great response to Your Move participation by the whole school, however, this doesn't appear to translate into deep behaviour change. We have noticed this trend since the Pandemic, when everyone was strongly encouraged to Kiss & Drop (car transport) for health reasons. The safety and convenience of this behaviour appears to have carried through at our school, beyond Covid-19 days. Changing this is our challenge!

Hi Elaine - thanks for sharing these reflections on your HUS results (you have earned 10 points on top of the 50 points automatically given when you submitted the results). Mmmm - these stagnating results are interesting especially with your regular AT days (and rewards) in place 🫤. I know other schools also experienced this, but many now seem to be seeing it turning around - so hang in there!

Hi James, I've been thinking about your comment "I know other schools also experienced this, but many now seem to be seeing it turning around". I wonder what strategies they used to turn it around? Do you know? We tried a wide range of new strategies this year but they weren't successful in achieving deep behaviour change.

Hi Elaine - in terms of activities you seem to be doing it all very well. I see that in 2022 your AT was relatively stable too. I do know that lots of schools this year felt that the recent hot weather had negatively affected their results, so that could be a factor for this year. One thing to consider is what would the result be WITHOUT the team's efforts and I think it is clear that there would be big reduction in active travel. If you do think that the success of "Kiss and Drive" is a big factor then perhaps you could have a campaign to specifically target these families and shift the "Kiss and Drive" to "Kiss and Ride/Stride"?

One thing you might like to consider - could it be that you are getting changes in the trip home, but not so much in the trip to school? With Kiss and Drive, it can be that many parents drop kids on the way to school but they walk home - it might be worth considering this for your surveys next year?
