Constable Care Safety School Excursion (1)

Last year, Eden Hill PS secured Gold funding, which enabled us to take two groups of students to the Constable Care Safety School in Maylands. It was decided that we would take one group of mixed-aged students who regularly ride to school (from Years 4-6), and the whole Year 3 cohort. After much planning and finalising of details, we finally went on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th June. As the Your Move co-ordinator, I purchased a ‘teacher relief’ package through the Your Move Rewards Store to ensure I could accompany the mixed-age group. As well as two teachers attending for each session, we also called upon a couple of parent volunteers to help manage our students on each day.

While there, students were:

  • shown how to check their bikes before riding (tyre pressure, seat height, brakes)
  • discussed and brainstormed appropriate riding attire and footwear
  • shown how to fit a helmet correctly
  • reminded and taught about road rules in order to keep them safe when they are riding on paths and roads
  • given the opportunity to ride bikes around the ‘road’ and practise adhering to road rules (giving way, stopping at railway crossings and pedestrian crossings and staying on the left hand-side of the roads)
  • they were also reminded about what makes a SAFE pedestrian and then given the opportunity to practise that on the ‘road’ while some of their peers road around

Every student loved it and it was wonderful to hear and see them participate so responsibly and enthusiastically and share their knowledge about road safety. Hopefully, we can do this again next year!

Thank you, DoT and Your Move for providing such wonderful opportunities for our students.
