World Bicycle Day 2021 – History & Maths Lesson Plan

Last Thursday, 3 June 2021, it was World Bicycle Day. Mount Lawley Primary School raised awareness through its fortnightly newsletter and the P&C Facebook page. Teachers were also made aware through the Staff Communications Meeting and how bicycles can help foster sustainability.

Ms Kerlin, a year 2 teacher, decided to take advantage of this day and planned several lessons throughout the week, for instance, her students:

  • watched a video about the history of bikes;
  • created a poster showing a timeline of bikes;
  • were involved in a maths lesson and cut out 2D shapes to make a bike, e.g. circles, long rectangles, their chosen shape for the seat, plus they counted vertices and edges; and
  • viewed the United Nations website about World Bicycle Day, discussed the benefits of riding a bike and linked it with the Your Move program.

The students learnt many amazing bike facts. A big thank you to Ms Kerlin for sharing her lesson plan with us.

Ms Kerlin sounds like Teacher of the Month, to me! She has earned 15 points for creating her own YM activities and 20 "Outstanding" points for combining so many elements on the bike theme. You have also earned 32 points for your newsletter and social media posts this term and another 10 points for sharing an all-round jolly good story 🤩.

Thanks James! (I was meant to say this before technology got the better of me..) We're happy to see the important message of sustainability spread around the community and teachers taking advantage of these special days.
