Bike Skills Refresher at Murdoch

In September, we used our YM Rewards points to host a 'Back on your Bike' lunchtime workshop for City residents and MU staff and students, led by the very capable Christina from People On Bicycles. The workshop was pitched toward people who know how to ride but need a little help to confidently handle a bike when out and about, and covered things like correct bike adjustment and simple riding safety tricks and tips.

We had five people registered but only 1 turn up, plus 1 person who was just riding past. Those two people gained a lot of benefit from the workshop.

Lessons learnt: Promotion and ensuring attendance at events continues to be a real challenge here at Murdoch Uni, particularly when engaging with students. The event was promoted via our student and staff intranet, e-newsletters, and the City of Melville events website. If we were to do this again in the future, we may try to hold the workshop on a weekend and/ or link it to another event happening on campus, for example our annual Dog and Jog fun run or another event organised by our Sport and Recreation team. It's also challenging to quantify what impact participation in the workshop had on the participants, especially for the participant who was already on her bike and riding past.

Thanks for sharing your reflections on this session, Leah. One thing I learned a while ago in a behaviour change workshop (I think by Doug MacKenZie-Moor) is that by charging people a nominal fee (say $5) they are much more likely to show up. It is just that people place a lower value on free things! Maybe this is worth experimenting with? It certainly sounds like you did enough promotion! Well I'm glad that the two participants benefited 😊. You have earned 50 points for putting this on, and 15 points for sharing those details and lessons learned.
