Biggest ever NR2SD for St As!

This year at St Augustines we had a MASSIVE National Ride to School event.

With enthusiastic and committed staff, student and parent teamwork, we were able to design and implement a great event for the school. The festivities included:

  • Breakfast for active travellers
  • Dress up your bike, scooter, skateboard, skates or shoes parade
  • Colouring competition
  • Slow bike races
  • Assembly presentations
  • Local Councillors
  • Accreditation status ceremony
  • Soooo many prizes

The student team had planned and defined their responsibilities in our preparation meeting so implementing the plan on the day was simple.

As students and families arrived at school there was a huge buzz of excitement in our middle play area. Students smothered in stickers had the opportunity to chat with their peers about their active journeys while crunching on fruit and sipping on yoghurt. Parents, teachers and special guests were treated to a steady stream of creatively decorated bikes and scooters coming through the gate while they chatted with each other about their own support role in getting to school actively. It was all over too quickly though, because the bell rang, signalling the start of our whole school assembly.

The staff team had carefully formulated and clearly communicated a plan for the NR2SD festivities occurring after the bell. With my assistance, Ms Twomey planned the assembly items and Ms Peake planned the bike parade and races. Ms Peake shared the ’run sheet’ with all staff so everyone knew what to expect of the morning.

The preparation was evident in how smoothly the festivities ran and in turn, how successfully the whole school team were able to Spread Active Travel Fever.

I am eagerly awaiting the results of the hands up survey that was conducted in the afternoon.

The school staff added a post about the day to Facebook:
