On Friday 12th February St Kieran Primary School participated in a Whole School Travel Festival organised by Mrs Spencer and the Your Move team.

It was a fun and educational day for students where they had the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities and workshops. Students learnt how to get to and from school safely using different modes of transport, the importance of active travel for our health and how to reduce our carbon footprint and traffic congestion around our school.

Throughout the day classes from Kindy to Year 6 rotated through a variety of travel and safety incursions hosted by: SDERA, RAC, Skateboarding WA, Transperth and People on Bikes.

The most popular and exciting activity was skateboarding and cycling. Some students fell over, some students showed off their impressive skills but most importantly there were lots of smiles and laughter and everyone had a go! I was so impressed with the student’s courage to try something new and their resilience to bounce back when they didn’t quite get it right.

Students got their creative juices flowing in RAC with lots of creative brainstorming and drawing. They worked collaboratively in groups to come up with lots of creative and clever ideas for creating safety signs and modes of transport. Transperth had the students using maps and having a go at tagging on and off the bus. They learnt practical skills which will hopefully give them the confidence to have a go at travelling by bus or train. The junior students were treated to a story and song by SDERA and they loved meeting Izzy the Lizard who reminded children of the Stop, Look, Think and Listen message.

The day left us feeling excited about all things riding, skateboarding and buses and we hope that this will inspire students to try a new way of travelling to and from school and change some patterns of behaviour to improve our health and help the environment.
