WALGA's Ride2Work with a Buddy Day

With funding from the Department of Transport, WALGA’s Your Move team organised a successful “Ride2Work with a Buddy” event on 13 October to celebrate WA Bike Month. Staff were encouraged to join one of four WALGA buddies, or cycle route leaders, on a ride along the Joondalup, Midland, Fremantle and Mandurah PSPs. The aim was to cover the main access routes to the office and assist staff to gain confidence with riding, so that they feel comfortable with adding a new option to their daily commute.

New and existing cyclists joined for a beautiful morning commute to work by bike followed by a morning tea for all staff. Staff that participated shared some photos from the ride in, with many scenic shots from the river foreshore and wetlands. Tepi McLaughlin, a researcher at the Telethon Kids Institute, provided an engaging presentation at morning tea on why biking is a great way to get around and gave us an overview of some of his research.

All in all, the event was a great success. We hope that our staff feel inspired and better equipped to consider riding to the office in the future!

Really nice Melanie 😊! Your Buddy event could be just what some newbies might have needed to get started. It will be interesting to hear if you end up with some new bike commuters after this. Let us know too if this becomes a more regular fixture or if some of the buddies continue to ride in together informally. You have earned 40 points for your Bike Buddy event, 25 for your morning tea presentation and 10 points for your engaging story. See you soon!
