Last year during Term 3, TS Officer Emma Jack and City of Rockingham Development Officer (Health & Well Being) Jess Sankey invited schools in the Rockingham area to attend a TS Workshop. The idea was to encourage more schools to become involved in TSTS and so take ownership of promoting Active Transport at their prospective schools.
One of the ideas floated at this workshop, was to place signage on the main routes to schools, encouraging walking & cycling. Much discussion was had with the final suggestion being that timed signage be used. So the "reasonable" times (" It's only 10 minutes.....") agreed upon were 15, 10 & 5 minutes from school.
These became a reality at the beginning of this year, for Warnbro, Charthouse & Secret Harbour Primary Schools, all of which are TSTS schools. Each school was asked to provide input regarding main routes to school and the school logo. So children (and parents!) at these schools were greeted by this eye-catching signage as they made their way to school for the first day of the 2016 school year.
This initiative is an excellent example of community collaboration with its LGA, in this case the City of Rockingham. On behalf of the above schools a big thank you to Emma and Jess, for getting this all started and for the finished product!
By the way, since that Term 3 workshop, committed Rockingham schools have agreed to meet on a regular basis.
