WA Bike Month Herdsman Adventure Ride

Many WDPS families participated in the Herdsman Adventure Ride as part of WA Bike Month on Saturday October 16. The event showcased great riding routes around Herdsman Lake which link to Subiaco, Leederville and the freeway bike paths from our local area.

The event featured an 8km supported family ride around the lake where the kids loved seeing turtles, ducks, swans and their cygnets on the journey.

On returning, children participated in a fun 1km time trial which was a great success! Next it was bike skills games where it was fantastic to see the WDPS students demonstrating their cycling skills and proficiency on a bike. They received some fabulous prizes from local bike shops for their efforts.

Taking part in events of this nature further develops students skills, confidence and love of riding a bike. It was great to see the bike being used as a way to actively travel with so many of the WDPS families riding down to the event!

This looks like a great event, Chris 😊. It seems you may have promoted it at the school - please let me know if you had a school newsletter item on it, or any other official school promotion. I'm looking for an YM activity to link your story to, as the "Get Your School Involved in Bike Month" activity actually related to getting teachers to use AT to get to school 🙄. I can, however, give you 10 points right now for your detailed story 😊.

Hi James, thanks this was a very successful event that complemented our YM program. It was promoted as a school event through Connect notices to all parents, school Facebook page (several times). and at the school assembly (by the YM student leadership team and the YM coordinator). This ride was part of our strategy to further encourage active travel to school by bike by getting parents involved in a ride with their children.

Thanks James! It was great that the parents could experience how well the children are now riding.
