Make walking, wheeling and riding part of your regular routine
There are plenty of ways you can incorporate active travel more often, rather than relying on the car.
From a short trip to the shop, to the work commute, school run, or getting out to see your local neighbourhood, walking, wheeling and riding might be easier than you think and can:
- Save you money and time
- Boost physical and mental health
- Reduce traffic and pollution
- Help you to slow down and appreciate your surrounds
- Be a lot of fun!
Start slow, give it a go
You don’t need to be a regular rider or need special clothes or equipment to jump on your bike or go for a walk. Walking, wheeling and riding could be for you, no matter your ability. Consider where you could give it a try in your local area.
Replace a short local drive with a walk or bike ride
Transitioning from the car to walking or riding for short trips doesn’t need to be hard. Plan the route and try to choose an easy win: flat route, good weather, no time pressure.
Build a habit – try motor-free Mondays
Try going one day without using a car. You could opt to walk or ride to a nearby public transport stop or station, the school run or the shops. Make it part of your routine, either monthly or weekly.
Start or join a small walking or riding group
Be part of a social group and walk or ride to your local park or café. Enjoy the outdoors while you catch up and you might even discover a new favourite spot.
Discover local trails
Hiking and riding trails are a fantastic way to get away from car traffic and enjoy the sights and sounds of our great outdoors.
Contact your local government
Check in with your local government to see if they have established walking or riding groups, resources on local paths and trails, and community events.
