Walk Or Wheel Hillcrest into Spring!

Student numbers wheeling and walking to school had fallen over the winter months, so what better way to kick start getting out of our cars for Spring 2020 than our second Hillcrest WOW Day.

We counted only 6 bikes in the our bike racks a few weeks ago, and that is not surprising given that our bike rack area requires an upgrade. Check out the pictures below. Today for WOW day we had 54 bikes and scooters with no where to park and lock. Our bike rack is also in the weather, further discouraging families from riding or scootering to school. Hillcrest PS is seriously chasing a Your Move upgrade!

WOW Day is also good chance for students to put in practice classroom education. Year 4 students have been learning about bike safety, so they knew the rules are no riding with your hands off the handlebars and make sure you have checked your helmet and have it securely on your head.

WOW Day is also about informing caregivers about a safe place to park down the hill from our school, at Hillcrest Reserve, so you can still get some exercise even if you can't ride or walk to school from home. Students, parents and teachers all met there at 8.20am this morning so that we could all wheel and walk together up the hill. A few teachers walked or got on their bike from home as well.

Our message is that Walking Or Wheeling is a great way for students to start the day - energised and ready for a day of learning. Students are able to add on healthy eating at breakfast club a few days a week .To top it off, it’s Cruiseday Tuesday every Tuesday now, so we can also be active at recess and lunch, on a day where the sun is shining and a top of 26 is expected. Hello Spring!

Great photos going up the hill (I can see where the school gets it name from now!). It sounds like the combination of WOW and cruiseday was perfect for getting people back into the swing of active travel. You have received 60 points for setting up a 'Park and Walk' initiative, plus a bonus 10 for giving us a great read and 5 for sharing your participation numbers. Yes, it does sound like some more bike parking is a great goal for the school - maybe you'll need some for the teachers as well if they can maintain their efforts too!

Thanks James, we do need better bike/scooter infrastructure. We posted about our Your Move initiatives on our school Facebook page and a parent did say they want to see better infrastructure to protect bikes/scooters. I noticed that we haven't shifted from silver level?

Hi Rachael - you are just 10 points short of gold level! You have 590 at this stage and need 600 - not far away now.

We have been going off the points on our page (redeemable points) at 1006. I can't see any other points. Is that not right? So even if we get to 1500 redeemable points we can't those packages in the Rewards Shop?

Hi Rachael. Your accreditation level (silver, gold etc) is based on points earned this year (590 - I'll email you a screen shot to show you where it is found). Your redeemable points reflects your 'bank account balance' of points available taking into account what you have accumulated and spent over time. Does that help at all?
