Walk Or Wheels (WOW) Day

With music and bubbles and wacky socks, Hillcrest Primary School families and teachers celebrated walking or wheeling to school today. This is our first WOW day, where families can park their cars at the bottom of the hill and all walk together. The focus is to demonstrate that even if you live a long way from school or are busy, there are ways to build in a walk before school and after school. It is also a way to reduce congestion around the school.

Even with the wind and rain around this morning we had a great turn out. It didn't take up too much time and everyone could join in. We hope to hold this event regularly throughout the year.

Hi Rachael - it is quite a crowd you have got together for your Park & Walk WOW day. And a big high-five for getting back online in 2019! Could you clarify a point for me? Is the WOW day held regularly (e.g weekly) and the Park and Walk was a new add-on? Or was the whole activity a bit of a pilot for a future regular day?

Hi James, it was the first of an activity we will hold at least a few times a year to raise awareness about different ways to get to school. Even if you drive you can build in a walk for students up to school and after school by changing the pick up and drop off places.

Thanks for the update, Rachael. I have linked your story to the "Run an event" activity, which is worth 40 points. I have also given you a bonus 10 points for letting us know how it all works. Next year if the event becomes a regular active travel day (eg weekly or monthly) you can get 90 points for each term that it is running. If you run it less often, say once a term, it would earn you 40 points each term. Have a great last couple of weeks and chat soon!
