Dress Up Your Bike - Walk to School Day

Merinda Smith
Honeywood Primary School

On Friday, 19th April we conducted our belated National Ride Your Bike to School day where we celebrated by dressing up our bikes.

Lots of children and families participated in the event and we had 231 bikes and scooters decorated! Our bike racks were full and so colourful this day! Our Principal and City of Kwinana staff Emily collected student names and room numbers and 3 winners were lucky enough to win a prize bag of toys and $30 voucher for Big W thanks to the City of Kwinana!

The bikes on display were very creative and the vibe around the school was happy and a great morning had by everyone! All those who participated in dressing up their bikes got a sticker and fruit followed by a walk down our red carpets. They also got a professional instant photo that they could take home. Bikes that had been registered on Bikelinc with the WA Police also received a prize.

Parents also enjoyed a free coffee when they arrived with their children.

Having the two red carpets this year for the first time ensured that we did not have one large line like in previous years and that students arrived at class in time for the bell. Much appreciated by teachers and parents!

A huge thank you to the City of Kwinana for their amazing support in the preparation and running of this event particularly Zi Wong, the City of Kwinana Active Travel Officer. As a busy teacher her organisation and support was amazing! If you are organising an event reach out to your local council and even if they do not have an Active Travel Officer there may still be ways they can support your event. We are extremely lucky at Honeywood Primary to fall under the City of Kwinana who has this resource. They supplied, staff, the red carpets, fruit, coffee vans and even down to the post it notes for our prize draw!
