Cycle through the City - Bike Month 2021

On Sunday 31 October as part of Bike Month festivities, the City of Belmont arranged a relaxed group ride open to all comers. We hoped a shared riding experience would help participants gain confidence, meet some like minded people and discover some new places around our City.

Two ride options were offered hoping to suit all ages and abilities (8km and 23km). Rides were led by experienced bike coaches from People on Bicycles. BikeDr mechanics were on site an hour before rides started to check bikes and make some tweaks. The City’s Crime Prevention team also came along to give away D locks to those who registered their bikes. Coffee and a proper sit down meal was also provided at the finish of the ride. This was a very nice way to wrap things up, come together and reflect on the experience at the end.

Some reflections. With 50 pre registrations we had only 34 participants on the day. Maybe over booking would reduce spare capacity on the day. While the sit down meal was nice maybe we could have had a few options for people just to grab some food and go. For the longer ride, perhaps a way for participants to self assess their skill/confidence for better grouping given the slowest rider obviously dictates the speed for everyone.

All in all great fun and some great feedback received. Thanks to Department of Transport, Westcycle and Bike Month for the support.

Wow! what an event... not such a "simple activity" to organise... looks like everyone had a great day.

Thank Trevor and James, I actually can't claim all the praise on this one. I partnered up with our Leisure Services area for this event. While a Bike Month event it was also included as part of our Movetober promotion (getting active through walking, riding and also using outdoor excersises equipment etc). James yes, we did get a Bike Month grant for this event which was a great support :)
