Bike Education Kicks off !

Bike Ed has kicked off! Despite the rain and the blustery windy conditions last week, Scarborough students enjoyed their first lesson with ‘PEOPLE ON BICYCLES’ sponsored by the Your Move Program. Every Monday for 4 weeks the students will participate in the Bike Ed program to learn many features of a bicycle, safety aspects, becoming safer and more efficient rider on the road. The students were introduced to the correct way to get on and off the bike, using brakes, fitting their helmets correctly and demonstrating a push off start. They may seem as the most basic skills, but wearing helmets is a legal obligation. Thus, if the helmets are too big, too small, or far too loose for their head it can cause serious injuries if they have an accident. With a quick chin test the students knew what they needed to do and adjusted their own helmets with the guidance from the team on how to adjust straps and the dial on the back of their helmet. In addition, the other key component on a bike is the seat. Students were shown how to modify their own seat and had a go at it.

What a fantastic turn out, almost all the students participated on the first Monday! We had a varied mix of abilities; some students brought their own bikes to school while others borrowed a bike. Extra support was given to those students that required additional assistance. This is a wonderful event organised by Your Move helping our students prepare themselves to be safer bike riders on the road and using their new skills to become more confident as active travellers to and from school.

The students are split into two, with Group 1 stating at 11:10. They had much of the sunshine with more time to ride bikes. Whereas Group 2 started during the rain at 12:10 when the rains came down hard, and the winds picked up. The blustery strength of the winds even knocked over some bikes right off their stands. However, they still had some fun in-between the showers and having parts of the lesson undercover.

Everyone is excited for week 2 and looking forward to getting back on their bikes. What is cool, even though we had the wet and windy weather, it was wonderful to see our bike racks almost full of bikes!!
